Natural latex - How balloons are made

Latex balloons are not plastic. They are a plant-based product, made from natural rubber harvested from rubber tree plantations which are a renewable resource.

The Balloon Crew is a founding member of PEBA (Pro Environment Balloon Alliance), which lobbies for and promotes the responsible use of balloons with relevant private, state and federal agencies.  There is a common misconception with latex balloons broadly being lumped in as a “plastic” and we want to ensure that any future policies and laws reflect this significant difference.

Latex balloons are not plastics. Rather, they are made from rubber harvested from rubber tree plantations which are a renewable resource.

Unlike plastic, latex balloons break down and decompose over time.

Although our latex balloons are able to break down, they can still litter environments. As such, we do not allow deliberate release of balloons and will not supply balloons intended for release. Eliminating this deliberate release and promoting the responsible use and disposal will prevent any animals from mistaking balloons for food and is vital for effective environmentally responsible change.

We engage with our clients on the proper use and disposal of balloons to ensure every care is taken to minimise the impact on our environment. When we have a design brief for outdoor events, we steer clients away from any elements that won’t survive in the Aussie summer conditions and take extra care to ensure any balloon decor are tied securely.  Weather conditions are also taken into account and in high wind conditions, we have cancelled or repositioned and redesigned decor to a sheltered area to prevent any damage to the environment.

The Balloon Crew have also implemented a collect and reuse procedure for elements such as foil balloons, framing or high end florals and foliage to ensure our waste is minimised.  These items are collected and stored for future re-use.
